Yesterday, Matthew Weeks, a young farmhand, was found guilty and is scheduled to be executed for the inhumane and merciless murder of a poor and unfortunate young farm girl who was killed several months prior. The trial drew a large crowd from far and wide, as people could not seem to resist attending to witness the verdict. The victim, Charlotte, had a rendezvous planned with her lover, Thomas Prout, at the chapel. She informed the farm owner, Mrs. Philipa Peters, that she would not be present for milking time but that Matthew would take care of her tasks in her absence. Later that night, Mrs. Peters became anxious when Matthew returned home with dirty stockings, supposedly from walking only to Higher Down Gate. However, he denied being on the moor and claimed that he had parted ways with Charlott
...e on good terms before continuing towards a nearby village. He also attempted to visit the Westlake family, but they were not available at the time.
Charlotte’s green gauze handkerchief was found in the coat pocket that Mr. Peters was wearing on the night she disappeared. Additionally, his razor was missing. A week later, dressed in his Sunday Best, Matthew informed Mrs. Peters that he would be back in time for dinner and left. However, he never returned. When Charlotte’s body was discovered, it was determined that a cut-throat razor had been used as the murder weapon. Furthermore, her body was located in the same area where she and Matthew had supposedly walked together. Moreover, witnesses claimed to have seen them together at different times further down than Higher Down Gate. Based on all of this evidence,
Mr. Justice Patteson ultimately declared the verdict as… GUILTY!
