Art Theme Essay: Deception The art of lying and deception has developed over centuries of mistruth, to become in today's modern world a necessity of life. Thus, the theme I chose for my body of works is deception. Deception is the act of misleading another to believe information that is false. In this case, my body of works are trying to decieve the person's perspective as if it was a surreal moment. I chose this theme because it relates to our modern society and it will give the audience a chance to reflect back on themselves.

Besides optical illusion pictures, not alot of artists are known to incorporate deception, due to the fact that they are scared of not getting their message across in a competitive art industry. Therefore, it makes it more original and unique if I atte

mpt it so I can discover my capabilities and versatility in visual arts. To begin with, I came up with this theme when I watched the mismerizing movie, "Inception", it gave me further insight on how society is being manipulated which lead to my theme. All of my body of works reflect back to my inspiration of artists such as, Henri Rousseau and Lucian Freud.

Both of whom are drawn into surrealism or post impressionism with their work. Based on Henri Rousseau's work, it depicted dreamlike imagery by being surreal and how his work was a flat, seemingly childish style. I can relate to his work since we both pay attention to detail and have the ability to retain our vision when working on a large or small scale. Whereas, Freud's work depicts subjectivity and intensity that have alway

set him up apart from the sober tradition characteristic of most British figurative art which usually was related to the World War.

I can relate to his work since we both express different emotions in our work, however Freud has a greater contrast and texture to his work and is more capable with the materials that is given. My first body of work is a self portrait in which I drew myself in the work. It is similar to an optical illusion, since the concept of my work requires time to notice it. I illustrated my portrait by drawing my hand with a pencil near my unshaded eye so it seems as if I was drawing it. In addition, I made parts of my work seem incomplete or in the progress of developing in rder to give my drawing a better surrounding and perspective. The materials that I used was only a pencil since adding color or any other tone would ruin my perspective of a drawing reliving itself. The most succesful part of my work is how I shaded the features of my face and hand to show that is was an actual full scale portrait drawing rather than a simple sketch. The least successful part of my work is how I made it look incomplete which might give some people the intention that it is not finished and they might not understand the purpose of my work.

Moreover, my second body of work is an installation art in which I drew dozens of stairways placed in awkard positions. I illustrated my installation art by thinking of areas where stairs would not intersect or would never

be placed. My purpose of this illustration was to show my audience that there are numerous pathways in life and great opportunities along every step of the way. The material that I used was pencil, however I regret using it since I did not show my capabilities for other materials such as painting or sculpting that would have made sense towards an installation art.

Therefore, it is regarded as my least successful part of work since it my fault of not trying to expand my work rather than playing it safe. My most successful part was how I shaded my stairs carefully and patiently to show contrast and depth. Lastly, my artwork of my choice is a drawing of my hand drawing smaller versions of my hand. I illustrated it by drawing one huge hand with its surroundings and then drawing the exact same things but smaller and smaller in order to show a repetitive effect of it never ending.

My purpose of this work is to let my audience reflect to show how their lifestyle is always repeating daily. The materials that I incoporated were pencil crayons and a pencil, however I used it to my advantage by taking the easy route again by using a pencil. Therefore, it does not show much creativity or variation in my work. The least successful part of my work is how I did not utilize the pencil crayon, thus it left blank white spots as well as not much detail of my hands.

The most successful part of my work was how esablished my concept for this piece, since I had a difficult time thinking of one at the beginning.

Overall, my three body of works were successful by establishing the concepts that relate to my theme. However, I would defined them as my poorest work effort since I did not show any variation throughout my work but the same material which was pencil. Likewise, I did not use my time productively in class since I did not find art class important towards my pathway in life, which eventually lead to my failure as a dishonest student.

I regret my decisions that I made at the beginning of the school year where I should have drop the course rather than go on and make it worse for myself. If I had the chance to change anything it would be putting more effort towards all three of my assignments and using my class time productively. Even though I have complicated classes to deal with this semester, those are not excuses for my poor effort in visual arts. Therefore, if I had the chance to do one more artwork again I would make it the best work that I have ever done in my life and enjoy it after I decide to not use this skill when I move on to university.
