Both the United States and Western countries have the highest suicide rates. Below are three risk factors for suicide.
Researchers have found three factors that increase the risk of suicide: a past occurrence of major depression, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse. They are alarmed by the rising rates of suicide among both young people and older individuals. Research shows that both age groups have witnessed higher rates of suicide; however, there has been a steady decline in suicides for these demographics since the 1980’s.
According to statistics, older white
...men in the U.S. have the highest suicide rate.
The decrease in suicide rates can be attributed to four factors: economic prosperity during the 1990s, an improvement in healthy life expectancy, a reduction in substance abuse, and a decline in homicide rates from 1960 to 1999 (McKeown, Cuffe, and Schulz, 2006).
The media has expressed concerns regarding the potential connection between medications and suicidal behavior, particularly in adolescents. In response to this, the FDA released a public health advisory recommending doctors to closely observe patients for signs of worsening depression when prescribing medication. Studies have shown that children who were administered SSRIs had a 1.5- to 2-fold increased chance of displaying suicide-related behavior compared to those who were given a placebo (McKeown, Cuffe, and Schulz,...).
