question
Choose two inventions or innovations that you think most transformed American society during the early 1800s. How did these innovations change the ways that people lived and worked? Why do you think that they had the most effect on society?
answer
Cotton Gin: helped make cotton a very successful crop and eventually helped move cotton production West. It did the work of some slaves so the slaves lost their work cleaning the cotton so they went out to help pick it. It helped keep the Southern economy stable. Steamboats: helped transfer crops from the South to the North by using rivers and canals. It had a large effect on society as it was the only way (besides by foot) that Southern crops were transferred to markets.
question
Write an account of the events in the picture. Be sure to include the place of origins and destinations of the ship, what business was conducted at each port, the conditions on the ship, and an account of what is occurring in the picture and what events may have led to the actions that are shown.
answer
The boat would have been coming from Africa to either the West Indies or the Southern Colonies. The slaves were probably beaten to get on the ship and once they were on, they were tied up in groups and forced to lay on the ground or stand by the sides of the boat. In this picture, multiple slaves are being thrown off the boat, because someone they were tied to got very sick or died. Laying in their own urine, feces and vomit most likely led to infection, which was probably the reason they died.

Explain two ways in which sectionalism caused conflict or tension in the US during the early 1800s. Then explain how sectionalism affects economics and politics in the US today.

It made people believe that their religious beliefs were more important than the political needs of the Union. Sectionalism today is seen when some political leaders bring religion into politics and it creates conflicts as there are a huge number of accepted religions.
question
How did the cotton boom affect the South economically in the short term and the long term?
answer
Short term: they gained lots of money, they replaced slaves cleaning the cotton with a cotton gin, less slaves had jobs Long term: led to the moving west of the cotton farms, farmers were getting lots and lots of money, states like South Carolina began breeding slaves for a profit so they could have more workers.
