Acute bronchitis – Flashcards

Secondary to an upper respiratory tract infection but can be related to exposure to inhaled irritants.

Inflammation of the trachea and bronchial tree which causes congestion of the mucous membranes, which result in retention of tenacious secretions. Secretions can become a culture medium for bacterial growth.

Productive cough, diffuse rhonchi and wheezes, dyspnea, chest pain, and low-grade fever. Generalized malaise and headache common.

Headache, feeling poorly, and aching tightness in the chest.

chest xray (examine lung fields for clarity) and sputum specimen to determine bacterial infection.

Cough suppressants (codeine and dextromethorphan - Pertussin), antipyretics (acetaminophen), and bronchodilators (albuterol, ventolin, Proventil). Antibiotics may be ordered (ampicillin) to combat or prevent an infectious process.

Facilitate recovery and prevent secondary infections. (Bed rest, humidity, and increase of fluid intake.)

Risk for infection R/T retained pulmonary secretions: 1- assess for infection (fever, dyspnea, mucopurulent sputum, amount of sputum. 2- Administer antipyretics and antibiotics as ordered.

Ineffective airway clearance, R/T tenacious pulmonary secretions: 1- Assess ability to move secretions and note increases in retained pulmonary secretions, 2- facilitate airway clearance by elevating HOB, liquifying secretions (humidifier and 3000-4,000 mL fluid daily, 3- suction as needed 4- Avoid dairy which produce more tenacious secretions.

Increase oral fluids, incorporate rest breaks, recognize worsening infection (increased dyspnea and sputum). Emphasize importance of medication. Avoid others to limit their exposure, avoid smoking and irritating fumes.
