After examining Utopia by Hythloday, I became aware of inherent issues within present-day society. Throughout the book, Hythloday continuously compared and juxtaposed the governmental systems of Utopia and various European nations. The Utopian society, which he portrayed as ideal, encompassed a multitude of features such as rational thinking, communal ownership, absence of greed for wealth, absence of social hierarchy, minimal criminal activity, eradication of poverty, acceptance of diverse religious beliefs, and limited inclination towards warfare.
Many of these concepts differ greatly from the society in America today. Despite the changes that have taken place since medieval times, has philosophy also undergone a transformation? (More individuals enter the room eagerly.) "Well, gentlemen ... I have become weary of the self-centered nature of American society. It is corrupt, insane, and utterly chaotic. However, being a
...man like any other, I hold strong opinions that I feel compelled to impart upon you. And I believe you would find them intriguing."
Perhaps you will also acquire new knowledge. Anyway, without any more delay, I will present my ideas for an ideal and perfect society." (Hythloday and Giles express their complete agreement by nodding.) "Please continue, More," they exclaimed. (More proceeds with confidence.) Firstly, while considering it equally significant as the other subjects, I lack trust in the government of the United States. They are actively monitoring phone conversations and various personal transactions. I believe that this surveillance culture was initiated by the Watergate Scandal involving Nixon.
Ever since then, the government has been selective in sharing information with us. As Americans, we have the right to be informed! Whatever happened to freedom of speech? So much for the first amendment. "Precisely," the
men agreed. (A gentle breeze blows in with the sun shining on a midsummer's day. More's face is shadowed.) Additionally, racism and profiling by major corporations and individuals contribute to tension between us. It is not only important for every person to be treated equally, but there should also be no hatred among us. Businessmen and politicians categorize us based on their own beliefs.
It is crucial to recognize that everyone has the right to their own beliefs, but it is unjust that equality was only pursued for men. The omission of women in this pursuit can be viewed as misogyny. To ensure the prosperity of our nation, we must reject hatred and discrimination. Hythloday fervently urged, "Yes, carry on! Please proceed."
(Despite Giles’ silence, he kept moving forward. The fire made cracking sounds, and everything was peaceful inside the cabin.) Additionally, there is presently a notable reduction in funding for education. Nelson Mandela famously said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This declaration remains valid. Education is essential for achieving success. Going to college is no longer a choice; employers are actively searching for students who possess high skills and knowledge. To become future leaders, we must give priority to education and all the programs it offers.
Although fine arts, which have been proven to enhance SAT scores, are frequently the first subject to be cut, it is illogical to do so. Diminishing our education compromises our potential for success. The men were astonished by this revelation. "Gentlemen, I deeply value your attentive presence and believe that the information I have shared will profoundly influence."
These are subjects I have
strong feelings about and I hope you can understand. Please make an effort to comprehend my rationale for all of this. We are America; we possess the ability to create an impact, and we will."
