Nick Diaz was disqualified from his desired rematch with his Ultimate Fighting Championship opponent during the UFC 143 event in Las Vegas due to testing positive for marijuana metabolites. The Nevada Athletic Commission disclosed on Thursday that this is not the first time Diaz has tested positive for this substance, as he previously did so after a match in Las Vegas in 2007.
Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada commission, has announced that Diaz's punishment will be determined in an April hearing after his loss to Condit. Despite Condit's unanimous decision win in the main event last week, UFC had arranged a rematch and Condit had agreed. However, Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie suggested this week that his fighter may not be able to participate in future events.
Condit, despite his initial skepticism, has agreed to consider a rematch with Diaz. In
...the USA Today/SB Nation consensus rankings for welterweight fighters, Diaz currently holds the second-best position. However, drug tests have repeatedly hindered his career. After defeating Takanori Gomi in 2007, Diaz tested positive and was suspended by Nevada for six months; this led to the fight being declared a no-contest. Additionally, in 2009 he was barred from competing for a Strikeforce title after failing to appear for an unexpected drug test issued by the California State Athletic Commission.
Gracie disclosed that Diaz's team believed the California authorities had verbally agreed to exempt unscheduled drug tests for a period. Diaz typically needed ten days to eliminate marijuana from his system to pass drug tests. In addition to substance abuse concerns, Diaz has been challenging to promote due to his involvement in post-match fights, missed press events an
conference calls, as well as skipping multiple bouts. UFC president Dana White indicated that if Diaz adhered to standard behavioral principles, he would not present any problems.
White conveyed his disappointment with the drug test results and left the penalty decision to the Nevada commission on Thursday. Condit won the UFC welterweight interim title by defeating Diaz, as current champion St. Pierre is recovering from a knee injury. St. Pierre is projected to return between October and November, so instead of waiting several months for his next fight, the UFC planned to schedule another bout for Condit. A lucrative choice would have been a rematch with Diaz.
It is probable that the drug test incident will cause Diaz to be suspended again, making it impossible for the match to take place.
