In 1997, Gattaca was released - a science-fiction movie featuring Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, and Uma Thurman. The plot revolves around Vincent Freeman (played by Hawke) who dreams of becoming an astronaut despite his genetically-encoded heart defect.
In the not-too-distant future, the film begins with the birth of Vincent, who was genetically predicted to die at age 30. The process of his birth is shown and the science behind such predictions is explored. Despite this knowledge, viewers may question why Vincent doesn't get his heart fixed. His dream of becoming an astronaut is hindered by his exclusion from the space program because of his illness, which deems him as an "invalid".
Vincent refused to accept his true identity and decided to create a new one, which I found admirable. Despite being just as capable and strong as
...everyone else, Vincent had convinced himself otherwise. Even though his brother Anton had declared that he never saved anything for the swim back, implying that he did not doubt his abilities, Vincent still believed himself to be weaker and used that belief as a point of comparison.
'Eugene', portrayed by Jude Law, is actually the new identity assumed by Ethan Hawke. Due to a back injury, Eugene lost the use of his legs and was available for purchase. Vincent bought his identity, allowing him to use it as his own. Although unusual, this method of 'cheating the system' is oddly fascinating and adds a quirky element to the movie's storyline. This approach is particularly appealing to me as I dislike the 'system'.
Despite the unexpected request for a urine sample instead of a blood sample, Vincent is allowed to go up to
space. The security guard who approved Vincent enjoyed the idea of bypassing the system, despite the fact that Vincent had virtually no chance of becoming an astronaut and being on the other side of that glass.
Despite any flaws in the system, I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing Vincent's ability to manipulate and hide his true self over the course of several years. This aspect is crucial to the film's impact, despite potential claims that it is entirely fictional. As a movie enthusiast, I found it highly entertaining and commendable on behalf of the director for their exceptional work on this project.
The film's most notable aspect was its lighting and light effects, which established a consistent dimness and frequent use of a yellow tint that had a significant impact on the movie's overall atmosphere. Although it was a science fiction drama, the film lacked any comedic elements.
The eerie and intriguing atmosphere experienced by viewers of Gattaca is largely due to the color scheme, working environment, and beach scenes depicted throughout the film.
Not only is the film captivating on its own, but the music also plays a crucial role in enhancing specific scenes. This is especially evident during Vincent's swimming sequences, where the music creates a sense of both excitement and anticipation. However, it appears that there may not be much room for additional improvement. Personally, I found Eugene's suicide to be an enjoyable aspect of the movie.
My experience with the movie was positive overall, thanks to the enjoyable variety of elements such as Vincent's bold and unlawful deeds and the exhilarating liftoff of the spaceship. Although it ended on a somewhat somber tone, I still found value in
Vincent's final voiceover. All things considered, my impression of the film was favorable.
Furthermore, Ethan Hawke is quite attractive which is an added benefit.
