The term 'spirituality', derived from 'spirit' and '-uality', pertains to a non-physical life force or entity. It encompasses all aspects related to spirit and its qualities. In humans, spirituality comprises two key elements: spirit and human entities - will and conscience. These elements contribute to various desirable traits like integrity, as well as undesirable characteristics such as selfishness. Spirituality also serves as the origin of hope, comfort, inner peace, and meaning in our lives.
Throughout history, there has been confusion between spirituality and religion. Nonetheless, I believe that spirituality goes beyond religious or faith practices alone. Religion builds upon individual spirituality which tends to be universal. Spirituality exists independently from religion within every individual; it shapes their character and behavior while defining their distinct attributes in life.
Fostering and integrating spirituality can be accomplished thr
...ough various methods. In my life, one significant way is by following the guidance of conscience. Conscience acts as an intellectual faculty, judgment, or intuition that helps distinguish between right and wrong. It has a substantial impact on my moral judgments.
Psychologists claim that spirituality is an inherent trait, so it is our responsibility to ensure that our spirituality is both virtuous and developing optimally. The development of spirituality relies on the people we interact with and the environment we find ourselves in. Seeking guidance from religious leaders and counselors aids me in cultivating my spirituality. Counseling involves having discussions about acquiring positive values in life, using symbols and narratives to enhance my thinking and reasoning abilities. This approach allows me to internalize beneficial lessons while rejecting negative ones. A 1997 study conducted by Stanford University supports this idea, revealing that college students wh
were taught forgiveness experienced a sense of relief, serving as evidence of their internalization of these teachings. My spiritual growth also stems from personal life experiences, learning from encounters and relying on the outcomes of my actions. Any adverse consequences prompt me to avoid repeating those actions, while positive results encourage persistence in my efforts (Geraldine, 2003). This process includes certain obligatory steps, some of which can be challenging. One must first deeply understand their reality and endure it for a specific duration despite any internal effects. Finally, one must apply the lessons learned from these experiences into their own lives. To summarize, the role of spirituality is crucial in human life, as individuals have their own distinct methods of embracing and integrating it into their everyday routines.
