Sister Callista Roy, a nurse educator, developed the Adaptation Model, also referred to as "Roy's Adaptation Model". This model prioritizes patient care and is utilized in both nursing care and nursing education. It focuses on four concepts and can be implemented for different diagnoses while always keeping the patient as the main focus. Presently and moving forward, the Roy Adaptation Model remains an essential tool for nurses.
For over thirty years, nurses have been using the Roy Adaptation Model to create care plans for patients. This model can be applied to patients of all ages and with any illness, regardless of whether they are in Orthopedics or the NICU. Nurses also need to be aware of their patients' coping skills. To ensure personalized care, nurses need to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate each patient individually because no two people are alike.
The idea of adaptation implies that patients have the capacity to learn new abilities and make essential adjustments. For example, if someone loses a limb in combat, they must acquire the skills to walk and carry out daily tasks without that limb. If they later receive a prosthetic limb, they must also learn how to use it efficiently.
To help patients reach their goals, nurses must focus on and understand the planning and implementation of changes that promote adaptation. Sister Callista Roy
developed a customizable model for each patient, known as the ROY Model. By using this model, nurses evaluate all aspects of care to ensure meeting the patient's needs and achieving their goals. If goals are not being met, nurses must make new changes and set new goals to support patients. In Case Study Number seven, I am responsible for caring for an elderly African-American woman who recently had heart failure and was hospitalized. During a home visit in this case study, I observe that she is experiencing shortness of breath and edema.
