The Friday prayer at the mosque or salatul Jumu’ah is an essential part of the practice of Salat and the life of a Muslim believer and holds special significance for both the individual and Islamic community and is considered one of the blessings with which the Muslim nation has been endowed as “the best day…(as) on it, Allah created Aadam” (Ahmad and At-AT Tirmithi). In the holy Quran and the Hadiths, it is mentioned that Friday is one of the most important days of the week because of this.
The Jumu’ah is an obligation upon every free adult(male) Muslim who has the ability to attend and is seen as a pivotal part of the Islamic faith. The procedure of the Jumu’ah differs from other prayers due to its significance and congregation. The first step in the proc
...edure is to purify your intentions, affirming that you plan to attend the Friday prayers for gods sake alone. Then move to purify your body through taking a shower or bath(ghusl), as the prophet Muhammad advised his followers to keep clean.
This is again to show your intentions towards Allah. It is also recommended to dress in clean, modest clothes. As the individual enters the Mosque or prayer area, he is to remove his shoes, to avoid dirtying the prayer rug as the ground being prayed upon must be clean of such substances, otherwise the prayers will be forfeit (Sunnat). The individual will then enter with his right foot first as it represents a beginning and is Sunnah.
The individual is then to offer two cycles of voluntary prayer known as tahyatul masjid salah(a
prayer to greet the Mosque). The next step is to sit next to the other congregants on the floor, choosing the space cloest to the front and then proceed to listen to the Adhan (call to prayer) – The service of now underway and talking is to cease. The Imam will then offer a Khutbah, which is followed by an offer of silent prayers, from which the Imam will then finish the final section of the sermon.
The Iquaamah will then be announced were the congregation will line up shoulder to shoulder forming a line that faces the Qubla and two cycles of salat will commence. Once the prayer is over, it is practice to greet the other people praying in the near vicinity around you by shaking there hands and saying “May Allah accept your prayers”. The individual may also like to leave an optional charitable contribution as they leave thus ending the Jumu’ah. The Friday prayer in terms of significance to the individual is enormous.
It is an individual obligation that is sought to strengthen ones faith and soul as it is a blessing that Allah bestowed on the people of Muhammad which benefits the Muslim believer as “when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off trading; that is better for you, if you know. (Qur'an 62:9). Directly before the prayer, the individual listens to a lecture designed to empower them with valuable knowledge about god and the religion of Islam.
This is significant for believers as it keeps them on straight path to Jannah it is a chance for
the individual to meet the obligations of the several core principles or pillars of Islam through worship (Salat), belief (Shahada) and charitable giving (Zakat), as all of these are included in the Jumu’ah. It is also a time for the individual to meet and greet others from his surroundings, strengthening the bond between fellow Muslims.
Whilst there is no special place or time to worship God, there are moment’s days or times that Allah has made more superior, no other day shares its virtues hence making Friday a significant day for believers to attend as its superior. It is also significant for the life on an Islamic individual as it is when supplications are granted for believers and wash away there sins whilst being rewarded with hasanat (righteous merits). It is also said that a person who goes to Friday prayer is said to have his sins between that Fridays and last forgiven as long as they fufill the practice in the right manor.
