In Krause's (1996) book, Christopher Mishandles tells his driver Jim Galling that he does not care about knowing the time, day, or location before embarking on a journey to live off the land in the Alaskan wilderness for several months. Mishandles was known for his dislike of being told what to do and how to do things. Despite his academic success and athletic ability - leading his cross country running team as captain in high school - Mishandles received a failing grade in physics due to his refusal to follow the correct lab report format. However, he always had all of the required work completed. On occasion, during his runs with the team, he would deliberately try to get them lost in the hills, encouraging them to race back to school. The questions remain: wha
...t was he seeking during his wilderness journey, and did he find it?Chris graduated from high school and later on college. However, he donated his money for law school to charity and vanished from society. Mishandles almost died from dehydration while on a trip to the Mojave Desert. When he returned home, his mother was upset and cooked all the food they had to get some weight on him. His father talked to him, which made Chris want to leave again as he was searching for an escape. Chris had a desire to live in the natural world where money didn't rule. He wanted to be separated from the modernized world, which led to him leaving his car, money, family, and friends behind. Chris didn't want to make any human bonds with people and didn't accept any gifts other than foo
and a place to stay. He also withheld his true identity from employers when he had jobs. Chris wanted to be isolated from humans, and he just wanted it to be him and the wild. He wanted to avoid conformity and be himself without influence from others. Chris disliked being told what to do, how to do it, what time it was, or what day it was.Mishandles was exceptional in every aspect of his life, being an accomplished student and athlete. Despite Chris' success in school, he received a poor grade in physics after repeatedly making mistakes in his work. On the other hand, he excelled in sports and was driven to leave everything behind and find a way out. Mishandles had no interest in forming personal connections with others and only accepted gifts from employers. He desired complete isolation from society and longed for solitude in nature, but people's influences threatened to change that.
