Upon reaching the bottom of the hill on the snow-covered sled, Jonas heard the music growing louder until he was convinced it wasn't an echo. With his final transfer of warmth to Gabriel, Jonas felt warmth returning to his body once again. He lifted Gabriel's body and trudged through the snow until he reached a house where a little girl was opening a gift containing a kitten. As Gabriel shook from the snowflakes landing on his skin, Jonas did his best to keep him warm, with all hope and warmth fading from his mind. Suddenly, the mother noticed the door opening and saw Jonas there with the child. As she bent down, she placed a warm hand on his arm and helped him up before taking him and Gabriel into her cozy home. "There was a lost boy outside the door," she told he
...r family. "I'll give him a bath." She called out to Jonas, "Come here, boy!"Jonas approached the bathroom slowly with the "Bring the baby" tool. He removed Gabrielle's tunic and then his own before stepping into the hot water. The woman who had helped him thanked him as warmth flooded his body. Jonas washed both his and Gabrielle's face in the water before dressing them in new clothes. The woman then showed Jonas to a room similar to his own, where he rested for a well-deserved sleep. In the following days, Jonas learned about the family's background, including that the red-haired, blue-eyed woman was the Giver's daughter. She had run away after being assumed dead and was unable to return to the community. Her husband, Theodore, was from Elsewhere, like their daughter
Laura. Playing with Laura, who had brown hair and green eyes, brought Jonas joy and comfort, though he still missed his old friends and family. In Elsewhere, there were more options, grandparents, colors, sleigh-rides, and most importantly, love.
