This essay looks at the main research method Kupchik used when he was working on his book, “Homeroom Security: School Discipline in an Age of Fear.”
The main
...objective Aaron Kupchik had for his research was to determine the problems with the then school disciplinary policies. He conducted his research in four high schools, two of them in the Mid-Atlantic and the other two from the South West. His intention was to get the point of view from all the stakeholders involved in the school system, which are; the students, teachers, parents and the security officers. In his approach, Kupchik interviewed teachers and the security officers, but his main target was the students because their opinions were not normally sought when it came to disciplinary issues at school. He was also interested in comparing how class and social background influenced disciplinary approach in American schools. It was for this reason that two of the schools he conducted his study were dominated by students from poor and minority background, while the other
two schools were dominated from students from middle-class and majority background (Kupchik, p.12)
In conclusion, it is obvious that Aaron Kupchik picked an effective method of approaching his research in order to get a true reflection of his topic of interest. It is for this reason that his findings have been widely accepted and used as a case study on the issue of discipline in school.
