Jonas, in his writing, focuses greatly on sameness as the people believed it would be beneficial to the community. Jonas describes the past generations which chose sameness and therefore analyzes sameness in two distinct perspectives. One of everyone in his generation having a chance to choose andtherefore people would not be divided along class lines. On the other hand, people would basically live like robots if not slaves. In the first instance, Jonas explains that in the past there was a sameness in matters of security. There was safety allover and therefore everyone slept comfortably in their rooms without fear of anything that could happen to anyone. This would be a fantastic life.
The second instance Jonas describes a courteous community where anyone could ask any other citizen a question or even call someone’s attention at wish; an
...d the second person would readily respond without feeling offended. This would be the best society as Jonas observes. In the third instance, Jonas observes that the people in the past who chose sameness were satisfied with what they got because after all nobody had more. There was no competition for any resource and therefore the people were just comfortable. Sameness has its unique benefits and drawbacks. One of the benefits is that there are no extremely rich or extremely poor people in the community because all people are made equal. This is closely related to the fact that unnecessary competition is eliminated from the community.
The available resources are shared equally and fairly to all people and therefore there is satisfaction and no embezzlement. All people enjoy security equally. On to the drawbacks, people do not have freedom to
venture into various fields or even work according to their thinking because everything is directed. One cannot live a life of his choice because he/she should be told where to live, who to live with, what to wear, the number of children to bear and many more things. People also become lazy because hard work does not pay. At the end of the day all resources are shared equally.
