As a percentage of total food spending, money spent away outside the home was twenty-five percent in 1970, forty percent in 1995, forty-seven and a half percent in 1999, and estimated to reach fifty-three percent in 2010” (Frazier, D. A. 2007).
We're been programmed to seek sweet and salty foods, and fast food knows how to pander to those cravings. “This hidden hand may be overriding individuals’ will because increasing evidence shows that junk food may be addictive.1,17 Palatable foods activate brain reward circuitry in a similar fashion to many addictive drugs, and soaring obesity rates may be correlated to the increased availability of and exposure to highly reinforcing comfort foods.” (Franck, C., Grandi, S. M., & Eisenberg, M. J, 2013)
