The full title of the novel is Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus. Prometheus was a Greek god who created humanity this links in with the book as Victor is the creator of the monster. The novel was written by Mary Shelley in 1818. The book is basically about a man who is obsessed with life and attempts to cheat death and is unaware of the consequences, that in the end go terribly wrong.
The main characters of the book are Victor, Frankenstein, Captain Walton and Elizabeth. Each of the characters tells the story from a different point of view.Mary Shelley has done this to manipulate the reader's feelings. The story is told from 3 different people: Captain Walton writing a letter to his sister.
The creature telling victor what happened to himself and Victor telling Captain Walton. The story is relevant in
...today's society because people are capable of cloning and genetically modifying. There are so many films about it, not only because it is simply a good book, but also there are several controversial issues, and because the monster can be portrayed differently. There are several interpretations of Frankenstein.Firstly there are some elements of child abuse, because Victor abandons his 'child' and leaves him to die. Another interpretation is that the suffering of both Frankenstein and the monster reflect how Mary Shelley suffered.
Mary Shelley's mother died giving birth to her. All but one of Mary's children died and Mary Shelley's husband died in a boating accident. This may be evident to why the suffering of Frankenstein and the monster reflected on how the author suffered. It reflects on how the author suffered becaus
Victor Frankenstein's mother also dies from giving birth. In the book we feel a lot of sympathy for the monster.
He is very lonely, ugly and is hated by everyone. He is rejected by mankind despite doing anything wrong. He is refused a bride by Victor. Furthermore, he is rejected by Delacey's family. This is confirmed when he states, 'I, the miserable and the abandoned, am an abortion, to be spurned at, kicked at and trampled on. ' This shows that he is feeling miserable and is being treated unfairly.
'I am alone and miserable: man will not associate with me; but one as deformed and horrible as myself would not deny herself to me.My companion must be of the same species and have the same defects. This being you must create. ' Here the monster realises that he is not normal and horrible and that someone of the same kind as him must be created that has the same things wrong. This makes us feel sympathy for the monster as he realises what is wrong and wants to change things.
The monster is extremely unhappy when people ignore or hate him. This is established when he says, 'The family were not entirely happy...
. I saw no cause for the unhappiness; but I was deeply affected by it. This quote shows that people are unhappy about him and he sees no reason for it. There are also several other things that the monster says that make you feel sympathy for him However, after being abused by human beings, he decides to hate all humans. He realizes in his journeys that he is ugly and revolting.
He says,
'All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! ' The monster is referred to as, 'monster', 'demon' and 'wretched creature'. Which are mean and terrible words to describe something. The appearance of the monster also adds to this point. The monster is revolting and horrifying, as he is made from different body parts of humans.
The monster kills Elizabeth and William, which is another reason why people do not feel sympathy for the monster. The monster feels no guilt after killing William. This is justified when he expresses, 'The child still struggles...
which carried despair to my heart... I gazed on my victim, and my heart swelled with exultation and hellish triumph'. This shows that he feels no guilt for what he has done and is very angry and does not regret killing him.The monster wants revenge he reveals his thoughts by saying, 'You can blast my other passions, but revenge remains -- revenge, henceforth dearer than light of food! I may die, but first you, my tyrant and tormentor, shall curse the sun that gazes on your misery.
' This shows he is very angry and seeks revenge on Victor for creating him and then just abandoning him and not creating him another creature with the same deformity as him. Mary Shelley also manipulated people's feelings and making them feel sympathy for Victor.First of all, Victor regrets what he has done, but does not think properly and abandons his creature. He is afraid of the monster and he tried to put things right once he realised what he did wrong.
His regret and guilt is
revealed when he says, 'I was seized by remorse and the sense of guilt, which hurried me away to a hell of intense tortures, such as no language can describe. " This shows he has realised what he has done wrong and shows his guilt. Victor also says 'I beheld the wretch, the miserable monster whom I had created' this reveals that victor sees the unhappy miserable monster. He tries to put things right. There are many reasons why people feel no sympathy for Victor mainly because he abandons his creature rather than even trying to teach it. He is also shown not to be a good father.
He doesn't even try to help his own creation. He is believed to have played god, despite warnings. This is shown when Victor says, 'Ye weep, unhappy ones, but these are not your last tears! Again shall you raise the funeral wail, and the sound of your lamentations shall again and again be heard. ' This shows Victor's anger.
Both of these characters have equal faults, but only one can be called a villain of this novel. I think that the monster is the villain. He did not begin his life as evil, society made him to evil. Even though he began as innocent, the abuse he suffered does not give him the excuse to kill others. There is no reason for murder. Victor abandoned his child but did not go around murdering people.
I definitely feel sympathy for the monster, but I feel that he shouldn't have done what he did. And feel more sympathy for Victor.
