Voice over Internet Protocol (Poi) and other IP-based communication services are advanced and mature technology solutions. Poi allows voice traffic to be transmitted over a packet-switching technology, enabling voice packets to be sent and received like data and video packets. This technology is used across a converged campus network and the Internet, providing a foundation for future networking and telephony developments. It also increases the availability of modern communication features and functionality to our campus community while controlling infrastructure costs.
The reason for adopting Poi is that Plain Old Telephone Services (POTS) are becoming outdated, and Poi offers services that were never imagined with POTS. At NUMB, our current telephone equipment is reaching the end of its life, and we need to upgrade to a more contemporary solution. The current Poi solution provides num
...erous new features compared to the existing NUMB telephone service, including Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Screening, Three Way Calling, Automatic Redialing, Call Forwarding, and comprehensive Call Logs. It also offers improved Call Conferencing capabilities and enhanced 911 functionality where the physical location of the phone is automatically transmitted in emergencies. Additionally, it simplifies the process of adding, moving, and deleting phones on the system.
Location Independence is a key feature of the NUMB Poi enabled network, allowing users to move Poi phones without the need for technician assistance. Secure calls are made using standardized protocols, and this system has the potential to save toll costs for off-site locations. Unified messaging enables access to both email and voice messages on one device. Users can easily log onto any networked telephone and have their calls routed to any phone they are working from,
including cell phones.
Future features of this network will include a person directory lookup and calling capability, integration with other services such as emergency notifications, video conversations, and data file exchange. Advanced telephony features like screen pops and interactive voice response are also possible with the Poi phone being on the same network as a computer.
Mobility will be enhanced with Poi enabled cordless phones that provide Wi-Fi and Woman connections. This allows employees to follow a mobile employee with a fixed telephone number between offices and even when away from the office.
Additionally, this initiative aims to develop an upgraded, converged, redundant, and cost-effective network infrastructure that supports voice, data, and video on one network, rather than separate networks for each. This infrastructure includes built-in features for liability and quality assurance. The infrastructure and technology enable various advantages such as enhancing organizational efficiency by improving help desk call centers and fortifying disaster recovery and business continuity plans. IP convergence is gaining popularity in higher education, academic health centers, unman services centers, law schools, and companies worldwide.
