For the past 48 hours, I have eliminated all the use of media except for emergencies, work, and anything to do with school. In general, "media" refers to various means of communication. For example, television, radio, the internet, books, and the newspaper are different types of media. The term can also be used as a collective noun for the press or news reporting agencies. it was not as easy as I thought it would be. There’s not many thing that can be done without the use of media.

I find it really hard to go through the day without having media, it is very inconvenient for me. Although I started the day feeling good, I noticed my mood started to change around noon. I started to feel isolated and lon

ely. I received several phone calls that I could not answer, it was hard. For example, I was supposed to meet up with some friends for coffee, but it was really hard to communicate without my phone. We had to plan the time and place a day ahead without having it confirmed on that day itself. Not having a cell phone created a logistical problem.

It was manageable for one day, but I cannot see how life would be possible without one the most important aspect of a cell phone seems to be being able to meet up with people it is problematic having to make up specific times and places to meet up with people: most of us are very accustomed to our flexible by-the-whim lives. as often as we did before. We usually communicate on a daily-basis. Hate the fact that I could not talk to him at all for 48 hours.

During class, I regularly check twitter to see what my friends are doing. Normally after my class I go out with my friends for lunch but since I cannot call them, I was not able to ask where they were going for lunch so I end up going straight home. The fact that I eliminated the use of media, I had absolutely nothing to do at home. I could not watch the television, go on Facebook, or listen to music. Since I had nothing to do I decided to take a nap. It was really weird setting my alarm clock instead of my phone, I never realize how much I rely on my phone until that moment.

For the first time, I did not go jogging like I usually do on weekdays because I cannot imagine going jogging without my iPod, I knew I would feel very uncomfortable without listening to music while I jog so I decided not to go. Moreover, although I will admit I do not actively keep up with breaking news every day I do get a lot of information on a daily basis through social networking, text messaging, and websites such as Gmail, where it does have headlines on the homepage. For the whole day I did not know what was going on with my friends, and it really made me feel so lonely, I felt very uncomfortable, and anxious for no specific reason.

This experience thought me that I

was very dependent on the media. I actually felt disconnected from the world during that 48 hour period. I clearly am addicted and the dependency is sickening. I do not know how to get everything done if there were no hand phones, laptops, and everything media related. To me, media is a way to connect to people in ways I never do on a day to day basis. With classes, location, and other commitments it’s hard to meet with friends and have a conversation.

Instant messaging, SMS, and Facebook are all ways to make those connections with convenience, and even a heightened sense of openness. Everything is so much easier with media. It also made me wonder how the people in the olden days lived their life without technology. From this experience, I learn so much about myself that I did not even noticed before this. The things I learn about myself are some disappointing and some are good. This is an experience that I will never forget. Starting from now I will never take media for granted because without it my world turned upside down.
