INTRO: schools

11 schools total all on Uptown campus except School of Medicine and Public Health. There are 5 schools undergrads can pick from: A.B. Freeman School of Business, School of Architecture, the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Science and Engineering, and the School of Public Health. When you apply to Tulane you apply to the overarching Undergraduate College. When you apply you are not locked into any major and as a student you may take classes within any undergraduate school.

INTRO: Physical Campus

110 acres and located about 4 miles from downtown. 3/4 mile long and about 1/2 mile wide. It takes 20 minutes to walk across campus, however the tour will be an hour and 15 minutes. The campus is divided into thirds by St. Charles, Freret, and Willow. Being so close to Loyola has created a very close relationship: students from both schools share dining halls, libraries, gyms, and classes!

6,500 full time undergraduates, 7,000 graduates, and 1,100 staff members. The current freshman class of 2017 is 1615 students. 85% of the students are out of staters, from all 50 states and over 30 countries. Tulane is the most geographically diverse school in the country.

Campus is going smoke-free and the new policy goes into effect August 1, 2014. At the moment there are designated smoking areas. We also have many green eco-friendly buildings including Dinwiddie, LBC, and Israel building. They are built with 20% less energy consumption, reduced waste, and water conservation.

Accelerated Medical Programs

Creative Med Scholars: apply during sophomore year with any major and guaranteed entrance to Tulane's Medical School without needing to take MCAT. TAP-TP: for Tulane Honors students who apply October freshman year. 3 years of undergraduate work, 1 year medical community service in New Orleans, then 3 years in medical school.

Audubon Park is right across St. Charles Avenue, it has a 1.8 mile track and an 18 hole golf course. Audubon Zoo also has numerous athletic fields. The fly or the Levee is also at the very end of the park on the Mississippi where students have BBQs and picnics often on Sundays. Magazine street has tons of boutiques and restaurants worth checking out while in town! The street car is an amazing resource for students to get downtown anytime for $1.25. It's the only moving National Historic Monument.

History of Tulane

Tulane was founded in 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana. In 1884, the school received a one million dollar donation from Paul Tulane who wanted to endow a university \"for the promotion and encouragement of intellectual, moral and industrial education.\" Following this endowment, the university's name was changed to Tulane University. Paul Tulane originally intended his donation for Princeton University but they declined due to his stipulation that they must change the school's name to his own. He is buried near princeton's campus with his back towards the school, facing the South and towards Tulane!

As you can see we are currently working to improve our campus. For the past 15 years Tulane has averaged at least one new building per year - and this year it is Howard Tilton Memorial Library that is getting bigger and better! When the project is complete we will have two additional floors on top of the already exiting four floor structure. These floors will consist of study areas, additional stack space, offices, classrooms, and computer labs. The construction project has been designed to allow for the building to remain open during the school year allowing students to utilize the space that we already have. During your time on Tulane's campus please feel free to explore our library, the entrance is on Freret Street and is open from 7:30 AM until 3:45 AM.

TEMS Tulane's on campus health center provides medical attention all day for students. In addition, doctors are on call 24 hours a day, including weekends. Specialists include Men's Health, Women's Health, Psychiatry, and Allergy. Should a student require more extensive care, they have full access to the downtown Tulane University Hospital. Mental health is just as important as physical health is on college campus, so the Tulane Health Center offers excellent psychiatric care for any student there. You can see a counselor or therapist at the student health center every week at Tulane if you need to, and it's totally free of charge for students as well.
