...s Kala Langw (Ya Purdie, 2010). One of the prominent elders of Torres Strait Islanders is Kevin Fitzgerald. He is also the Council’s cultural advisor of this community. As such, Kevin Fitzgerald is highly respected by Torres Strait Islanders.
The primary economic activity of these people is agriculture. They grow crops, fruits, and vegetables as the main source of food as well as the source of income for the families. Also, the Torres Strait inhabitants supplement agricultural products with other food products obtained through gathering and hunting. Also, they also get reef fish, crayfish and crabs through fishing activities.
The indigenous people of Torres Strait were colonized by the British and as such, the influence of colonialism is still evident in the present day. For instance, the majority of the population is Christians. Christianity brought about a significant cultural paradigm shift among this people. Politically,
Torres Strait Islanders are governed by a political system of elected councils. The system is based on both mission management system and traditional local government (Shnukal, 2011). One of the notable Islanders is Christine Anu, who is both an actress and pop music singer. This community can easily fit in my community because we share a common religion. Since they are Christians, integration of these people in Christian community will be easy.
