Number The Stars Summery
The story starts with Annemarie, Ellen, and Kristie walking home from school. They encounter two Nazi soldiers, causing Annemarie and Ellen to feel afraid. In contrast, Kristie is courageous and wishes to confront the soldiers. The girls rush back home to Mrs. Johansen, who is deeply concerned.
After September passed, a new law required all Jews to go to a concentration camp. As a result, the Rosens asked if Ellen could hide with the Johanssons and pretend to be Lise Johnson, Annemarie's sister. During the night, while the girls were asleep, two Nazi soldiers entered to search for the Rosens. Upon reaching the girls' room, Annemarie noticed that Ellen was still wearing her Star of David necklace. As she tried to remove it, it became stuck. In a last-minute attempt, Annemarie managed
...to yank it off just as the soldiers stormed into the room. Another complication arose as Ellen had brown hair while everyone else had blonde hair. To resolve this problem, Mr. Johansen showed the soldier a photo of the real Lise as a baby, proving that even as an infant, Lise (aka Ellen) had brown hair.
The following day, Mrs. Johansen made the decision to go to her brother's house for safety. Annemarie, Ellen, and Kristie packed their bags and boarded a train to Uncle Henrik's. Upon arriving at his house, Uncle Henrik was still out fishing. Therefore, the girls assisted Mrs. Johansen in preparing dinner. The day seemed to stretch on, and once Uncle Henrik returned home, he delivered the news that Great-Aunt Birte had passed away. Annemarie, however, knew that no such person existed since she was familiar with ever
member of her extended family on both sides and knew that there was no Great-Aunt Birte.
Prior to the funeral, Annemarie visited the barn, where Uncle Henrik was milking a cow. Uncle Henrik praised Annemarie for her courage and confirmed that there was indeed no Great-Aunt Birte. During the funeral, Annemarie was unfamiliar with the attendees, but then Ellen was reunited with her parents. Afterward, everything proceeded as expected for a real funeral, yet one wonders who these unknown individuals are.
