Trash (2010), a novel by Andy Mulligan, ends with the protagonists Raphael, Gardo and Rat starting their new life together. In the course of the novel, they faced many challenges and their friendships grows. Each character has qualities which helped build this friendship. Raphael shows the qualities of friendliness, kindness, caring and selfless. Gardo shows the qualities of empathy, cleverness and leadership. Rat shows the qualities of trustfulness, sneakiness and thoughtful. The boy’s friendship holds the key to their survival, helping them to leave the dumpsite and find a better life.

Raphael’s key qualities are friendliness, selfless and clever. Raphael shows the quality of friendly in the scene where he listen to Rat when nobody knows what he is doing. A quote which gives evidence of

All of these qualities helped Gardo to overcome his hardship and of being a good help to his family and friends. Rat’s key qualities are leadership, smart and empathic. Rat shows the quality of leadership in the scene where he goes to the station. A quote which give evidence of this quality is “don’t run he said slow down ok. ” ( Mulligan, 2011, pg. 42). Another important quality that Rat shows is smart. He demonstrates this quality in the scene where he make it look like he is meant to be there.

quality is “ we need your help I said. That ok. ” ( Mulligan, 2011, pg. 22). All of these qualities helped Rat to overcome his hardship and be a good friend to Raphael and Gardo. This essay has discussed how the qualities of Raphael, Gardo and Rat develop in the novel ‘Trash’.

Raphael is friendly, kind/ caring and selfless. Gardo is empathy, clever and a leader. Rat is trusting, sneaky and thoughtful. At the conclusion of the novel, the three boys feel like they are able to achieve anything. They are free to fulfill their dreams of going fishing on a boat for ever. Despite many hardship, Raphael, Gardo and Rat grow as characters and friends. finally they arrive at a ‘beautiful‘ place where their lives can be lived more honestly: ‘We can tell you the truth, for the lying is finished‘ (pg. 202).
