Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the leader to be of Austria-Hungary went to Sarajevo with his pregnant wife Sophie. To get revenge, a 19-year-old Black Hand member, fatally shot Ferdinand and Sophie.

Austria-Hungary gave a ultimatum to Serbia and then declared war on Serbia. The ultimatum said to avoid war Serbia MUST end all anti-Austrian agitation and punish any Serbian official involved in the murder plot. The Serbs must also let Austria join in the investigation. The Serbs must agreed to most of these conditions but not all, however if they made a partial refusal Austria with the backing of Germany would declare war.

Russia, big brother to Serbia responded by declaring war on Austria-Hungary.

Germany the declared war on Russia then France.

They went through Belgium which was a neutral country. Therefore Britain declared war on Germany.

The triple alliance became the central powers
