Debate centered around the number of bonus points, ultimately settling on two as the most popular option. Despite these changes, last season's championship winner, Johnson, expressed doubt that it would significantly affect final standings.

According to him, winning requires consistency. This was echoed by Jeff Gordon, a four-time champion who also found the new point system more logical, admitting to being confused by the previous system. Richard Petty, a seven-time champion, also supported a simpler point system but disagreed with the practice of awarding bonus points for anything.
