Broadly speaking, there are primarily two types of gymnastics.

These are Artistic Gymnastics and Rhythmic Gymnastics. There is a further classification of the Artistic Gymnastics as Women’s and Men’s Gymnastics. There are six types of events that are categorically involved in Men’s Gymnastics. These are Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, High Bar, Parallel Bars and Floor Exercise.

There are four specific events included as a part of the women’s gymnastics. These are Uneven Bars, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise and Vault. Women gymnasts have been also seen to perform on parallel bars, rings and high bars across some of the countries. the artistic gymnasts participate and the scoring system that is generally followed as a part of these competitions is the standardized level system wherein the scores are allocated from the Level 1 to Level 10.

The use of compulsory routines is generally made from Level 1 to Level 6 and the athletes generally make use of their own routines in the case of Levels 1 to 6. The second type of broad category of gymnastics is rhythmic gymnastics wherein primarily the women have been seen to enter into any kind of competitions. However, recently a new discipline of this form of gymnastics has been pioneered in Japan that is specifically targeted at the level of male gymnasts. Five separate routines are generally performed as a part of this sport.

ribbon. These apparatus are generally used on a floor area. There is a much higher priority given to aesthetics in this form of gymnastics rather than acrobatics. Group routines are also performed as a part of rhythmic gymnastics wherein generally 5 gymnasts are involved and they generally have the flexibility of choosing 5 apparatus of their own. A total 20 points are generally used in order to score artistry in case of rhythmic gymnastics.

The evaluation is also done for the music and choreography that support this gymnastic act. Yet other forms of gymnastics are Trampolining and Tumbling. These forms of gymnastics are generally known to consist of four events. Amongst these events are power tumbling, individual events, synchronized events and double mini events.

There is generally a build-up phase that is involved as a part of the different individual routines. In this phase, the gymnast is seen to perform repeated jumps with the objective of attaining a particular height. This is then followed by a well defined sequence of ten consecutive leaps that are completely without any kind of pauses. In this sequence, the typical aerial skills are generally displayed by the gymnast. In case of synchronized trampoline, the prime requirement is that there should be a perfect coordination between the gymnasts such that they can successfully perform the routine together.

There are still other forms of gymnastics. These are display gymnastics and aerobic gymnastics. People of all age groups can actually participate in display gymnastics. In this form of gymnastics, the acts that are performed are generally choreographed and synchronized routines.

In case of aerobic gymnastics, different routines are performed by some individuals

or pairs or people in trios. These can also be performed by a group of individuals have a total of up to 6 gymnasts.
