The Chemistry of Copper: AP Chemistry Lab Report Essay Example
The purpose of the laboratory experiment was to observe the qualitative aspects of a copper reactions series. The lab report was required to include a purpose, procedure, data/observations, all reactions and side reactions written out with qualitative data beneath each product and reactant except H2O, and a summary. The procedure involved measuring about a leg of solid copper and placing it in an Erlenmeyer flask under fume hood. Then, MM HON was added until the solid copper was completely reacted. The flask was placed in a water bath, and MM Noah was slowly added until no more solid formed. The contents were swirled slowly, heated to boiling while stirring, and left to cool and settle. The liquid was decanted from the solid, which was washed with water and decanted again. Lastly, MM HCI was added until the solid
...disappeared, followed by 1-2 ml excess. During the experiment, it was observed that starting with a leg of orange/bronze solid, clear blue liquid formed when Cue was fully reacted. Solid blue precipitate formed when Noah was added, and the solution turned black when heated. When settled, a dark crystalline solid could be seen on the bottom, and a clear colorless solution on top. Adding HCI resulted in a bluish/green solution form, and adding solid AH caused bubbles to form and the intensity of the solution's color to diminish. After completion of the reaction, we observe an orange/bronze solid and a clear, colorless solution. The reaction cue + NINNY forms orange/bronze solid and a clear, colorless liquid while the reaction CUE(NON) 2 + NONE + AH produces a clear, blue liquid and a red/brown gas. The addition of NOA
results in a clear, colorless liquid and a blue solid precipitate. Furthermore, excess HON. + Noah = Nanny + H2O generates a black, crystalline solid and a clear, colorless liquid. On the other hand, the reaction cue + AH forms a blue/green solution and the reaction ICC + local produces a silver solid and an orange/bronze solid with a clear, colorless liquid. Lastly, excess CLC + al = AH + lace results in a colorless gas. In summary, this experiment provides us with the opportunity to observe copper undergoing a series of reactions. Initially, copper is an orange/bronze pure solid which later forms part of a clear, blue solution upon addition of HON. It then becomes a blue solid precipitate upon adding Noah and turns into a black crystalline solid in due course. Next, the reaction of HCI produces a blue/green solution while that of aluminum reverts to pure solid copper. Provided there was enough time for complete reactions to occur, the mass of copper at the end should have been equal to the mass of copper we began with.
