Lying in darkness, I contemplated my surroundings. People's voices and noises echoed around me, but I couldn't see anyone. They kept mentioning a name, Adele, which was unfamiliar to me. Despite my efforts to listen closely and understand their words, all I could recall was the recent violent attack and the subsequent darkness that enshrouded me. Straining to identify specific sounds or voices proved futile.
The darkness enveloped me like a suffocating blanket; it was thick and pitch black, almost drowning me. All I could distinguish was the sound of crying, but the reason behind it was unclear. Suddenly, another voice broke through - a distressed, deep male voice amid sounds of beeping and movements that made no sense.
As the sensation of suffocation dissipated, the shadows shifted to a lighter shade of grey which swiftly turned into a
...blinding white light. The sudden intensity of the illumination made me wince and immediately shut my eyes tight. The previously muted voices now resounded, reverberating around me from all directions.
As I was overwhelmed by memories of a distressing past event, my mind became silent. My thoughts were consumed by images of brown furred creatures with bloody fangs causing havoc amidst the surrounding voices. Simultaneously, I experienced sharp pain on the left side of my head as I attempted to release these recollections. Eventually, a woman's voice cut through the chaos and addressed me directly - "Adele, Adele, are you alright?"
Despite being unfamiliar with it, I came to the conclusion that Adele was my name. Suddenly, I felt a prickling sensation on my right arm, as if spiders were crawling up it. It was like something was being remove
from my arm and a voice instructed me to consume a sweet substance. Upon swallowing it, my entire body heated up and the excruciating agony vanished along with the prickling in my right arm, leaving me with clear thoughts.
Upon awakening, the brightness was so intense that I had to close my eyes again. However, when Paul's cold hand touched my arm, it sent a shiver down my spine. His aftershave triggered memories of our past activities such as going out and watching movies.
Proposing to me, he became my fiance and we planned a wedding in four months. His brown eyes looked up at me as he knelt down and asked the life-changing question: 'will you marry me'. I vividly remember responding with an enthusiastic 'yes', although I wished to remain in that moment and avoid facing reality. However, memories of it slowly faded away.
As soon as I heard him speak, I eagerly opened my eyes to get a glimpse of him. However, upon seeing him, the vast difference between reality and my mental image caused me to quickly shut my eyes again. Despite having brown eyes, he was entirely different from what I had envisioned. Under my breath, I whispered that he resembled a mouse. Suddenly, he moved closer, causing me to shudder as his whiskers grazed my cheek and his rodent lips touched my skin.
As he leaned in to hear my reply, I repeated myself, causing him to recoil and chaos ensued with everyone asking what I had said. The woman who called my name asked me to open my eyes and upon doing so, I saw that everyone around me was a mouse.
She requested another mouse bring me a mirror but I declined as I already knew what I would see. The mouse with the mirror was probably my brother while the female mouse referred to me as his sister, likely my mother. Suddenly a voice echoed from the door and a mouse wearing a white lab coat entered causing me to laugh - it was most likely myself.
After suffering a serious head injury from a rat attack, my mother was informed that I may not remember much. My brother handed me a mirror and asked why I needed it before I ultimately accepted my fate and lost consciousness as my surroundings faded away. When I woke up in a dark room on a blue bed with floral prints, it became evident that everything had been merely a dream.
As my mother called me for breakfast, I thought to myself that she might find my nightmare amusing. However, when I woke up and rubbed the sleep from my eyes, I realized that my hands were no longer human. I got out of bed slowly and opened the curtains before walking towards the mirror. To my surprise, it was no dream - I was still a mouse. Memories of being attacked and taken to the hospital came flooding back to me, but because of amnesia, I couldn't remember who or what had caused this sickness - even forgetting my own name.
Over time, my recollection of memories improved and I accepted the reality of the situation. While avoiding looking at myself in the mirror, I saw Paul standing by the entrance looking concerned. He asked about my troubling thoughts, but
I deemed them unimportant and expressed a wish to move forward. However, unsettling dreams continued every night until I confronted my true self.
