What is Top And Bottom?
The terms top and bottom are often used in the context of BDSM, a term that stands for Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, and Sadism & Masochism. Top is the person who takes on the dominant partner role in a BDSM relationship while bottom is the one who takes on the submissive partner role. The top is typically in control during sexual activities, deciding how things will proceed and when they will stop. The bottom may have some input into what happens during play but generally follows instructions from the top. When engaging in BDSM activities it’s important to remember that safety should always be at the forefront of both partners’ minds. This means understanding limits, setting boundaries, and having an agreed upon safe word that can be used if either person feels uncomfortable or needs to take a break from activities. Additionally consent should always be obtained before any type of scene begins; without it there can be no real power exchange between the two people involved. In some cases roles may switch back and forth between top and bottom throughout different scenes or even within one single scene as part of a negotiated agreement between partners. It’s also possible for someone to enjoy both roles equally so they don’t necessarily choose just one to identify with all of the time although this isn’t true for everyone involved in BDSM relationships as some people prefer to stay in either their dominant or submissive role consistently. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference between partners involved when exploring these kinds of topics together.
