What is Sexology?

Sexology is the scientific study of human sexuality, including the biological, psychological, and social aspects of sexual behavior. Some areas include gender identity and gender roles; sexuality in different cultures; relationships between partners; fertility related issues; anatomy and physiology; STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases); sexual dysfunction (such as erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation); contraception choices; sex education; legal issues related to sexuality; reproductive technology (such as IVF); pornography and its effects on individuals and society; child development related to sexuality; LGBTQ issues (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual); prostitutions studies etc. Sexologists also often work with people who have sexual disorders or concerns about their own sexual functioning.Sexology also includes research on cultural influences on sexuality such as religious beliefs or moral values which might shape an individual’s perceptions about sex. This research can help us better understand these influences in order to create more effective interventions for those who are struggling with negative feelings associated with sex or gender-based discrimination or harassment. Additionally, this field helps inform public policy decisions regarding the regulation of sexually explicit material like pornograhy that may be considered offensive by some members of society while others view it differently depending on their own personal beliefs or preferences. Ultimately this type of research helps us develop more effective approaches for addressing certain societal problems related to sex such as rape culture or teenage pregnancy prevention efforts. Overall sexology provides an invaluable source of information regarding human sexuality which can help us better understand ourselves as individuals and how we interact with each other both sexually and non-sexually within our societies today.
