Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are two of the most iconic characters in literature, originating from William Shakespeare’s famous play, Hamlet. Their passivity serves as a stark contrast to Hamlet’s erratic behavior; while he struggles to come to terms with his father’s death and avenge him through any means necessary even if it means sacrificing himself Rosencrantz and Guildenstern prefer not to get too deeply involved in matters that clearly do not concern them. This detachment allows them to stay out of danger for much longer than Hamlet does until eventually even their apathy proves fatal for them both when they inadvertently become pawns in Claudius’ scheme against the Prince.
