What is Art History?
Art history is a field of study that looks at the development, production and meaning of visual arts throughout time. It examines the changing styles, methods, materials and forms used by artists from different cultures and eras. Art historians are also interested in how art was used to communicate ideas or tell stories in various times and places. The history of art dates back to ancient prehistory when people first began creating works out of natural resources such as stone and clay. As civilizations developed over time, so did their art practices for example Ancient Egyptians created highly stylized sculptures while Renaissance painters made use of perspective techniques. As technologies evolved over centuries, so too did artistic processes such as lithography in the 18th century or photography in the 19th century leading to further developments within the mediums themselves.By studying art history we gain insight into not only what happened during specific periods but why it happened helping us understand how past events shaped our present world. We learn about diverse ways humans have expressed their beliefs, emotions and values through artwork which can be both informative and inspiring when it comes to making creative decisions today. Additionally, looking at artwork from other points in time allows us compare them with current works potentially giving rise to new thoughts or interpretations on certain topics now more than ever before. In conclusion, art history provides an invaluable look into many aspects of human life including politics, religion and culture through its examination of images produced throughout our shared pasts thus allowing for greater understanding among societies today.
