What is Architecture?

Architecture is the art, science and technology of designing, constructing and maintaining buildings and other structures. It includes both the design of individual buildings and the planning, design, construction and management of entire cities. Architecture is a reflection of a culture’s values, beliefs and ideals. It shapes how we interact with our environment by providing us with places to live, work, play or just visit.Architecture has been practiced since ancient times but has changed dramatically in form over time as new technologies have become available and cultural values have evolved. Architectural styles are often associated with particular periods or regions but can also be uniquely designed to express individual personalities or preferences. Architectural styles vary greatly from minimalist modern designs to ornate Gothic cathedrals.The principles of architecture are based on mathematics, physics and engineering concepts such as structure, materials science (including acoustics), environmental psychology (for example ventilation) and building codes (which provide safety regulations). Architects must also consider elements such as aesthetics when designing a building so that it not only looks attractive but functions well for its intended purpose.For most people today architecture is seen as an artistic practice more than a technical one but throughout history it has had both practical application for sheltering people from the elements as well as symbolic meaning for humans living in different cultures around the world. One thing all architects share is an appreciation for beauty in their designs which reflects their unique vision while striving to create something functional that will last through time while standing out from its surroundings in some way or another.
