What is African American History?
African American History is a long, rich and complicated history that has had a significant impact on the United States of America. African Americans have been an integral part of America’s social fabric since the earliest days of colonization, making their mark in every field imaginable. From politics to sports to music, African Americans have consistently contributed to our society and culture in a profound way.The journey of African Americans begins with slavery. Although it was an abhorrent institution, it also served as a catalyst for the growth and transformation of African American culture and identity. After emancipation from slavery, African Americans began fighting for civil rights in earnest. This period saw the passage of key legislation such as the Civil Rights Act (1964) which prohibited discrimination based on race or color, as well as more progressive policies like Affirmative Action (1965). The fight for civil rights continues today through organizations like Black Lives Matter which seeks to bring about police reform and end systemic racism.African American History is also marked by its major cultural milestones such as The Great Migration when millions of African Americans left the South in search opportunity and freedom; The Harlem Renaissance when literature flourished; Rock n’ Roll which blended black music with white influences; Motown Records which created soulful sounds rooted in gospel music; Jazz which has its roots in New Orleans; Hip-hop revolutionized popular culture with its beats, rhymes, and attitude; and more recently Barack Obama becoming the first black President of the United States. In conclusion, there is no denying that African American History is an incredibly important part of our nation’s history and will continue to shape our future for years to come. It serves as a reminder that no matter how hard life can be at times we must never forget those who came before us who fought so hard just so we could be here today living freely without prejudice or bigotry.
