Of all the places in the world, you would think that a school is the safest place for a child to be. Sometimes this isn’t the case. In this speech, I will talk to you about how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons will be a good idea. I will talk about the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon, how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons is helping other countries, and why Gun-Free zones aren’t working. Let’s start with the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon.

There are three main advantages for allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon. The three advantages are casualties will be reduced if you could take down the shooter quickly before the shooter kills any more people, teachers can be a tremendous deterrent to crime, and

teachers can help stop another school shooting for example, Columbine or Virginia Tech. Let’s start with the first advantage. Casualties will be reduced if you could take down the shooter quickly before the shooter kills any more people. An armed teacher provides more immediate protection for the students than a police officer on the phone.

It will take probably 5-10 minutes before the police will even get there. That is too much time for the shooter to do whatever he wants. So, if some teachers were carrying a gun, they could take down the shooter quickly before more damage is done. The second advantage is that teachers can be a tremendous deterrent to crime. With the proper training they can be. If police officers can be trained in a responsible manner for the uses of a deadly force, so ca

teachers.

Proper training is the key. As I said if my first speech, there was an article in the New York Times stating that there is a tiny town in Texas that is allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons. The Superintendent David Thweat is the one that pushed for the policy to allow teachers to carry a concealed weapon. He is quoted for saying that, “Our people don’t want their children to be fish in a bowl. ” He also said, “They are not under the illusion that the police are there to protect them.

” In that particular town, the county’s sheriff’s office is 17 miles away and the district cannot afford to hire police officers to keep them in the school. This is a big problem because if something happens, they have to wait probably 20-30 minutes until the police show up.That is way too much time for damage to be done. The third advantage is that teachers can help stop another school shooting for example, Columbine or Virginia Tech. If there was at least one teacher with a gun at those school shootings, that teacher could have stopped the massacre and saved lives.

My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to

safeguard their students and themselves. ” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it.

The article also stated that, “Terrorist attacks on schools and school children could almost be completely eliminated in a very short time. ” There are examples of attacks on schools that have failed. In late May 2002, an Israeli teacher shot a suicide terrorist before he could harm anyone. Also quoted from the article, “On May 31, 2002, as reported by Israel National News, a terrorist threw a grenade and began shooting at a kindergarten in Shavei Shomron. Then, instead of closing in on the children, he abruptly fled the kindergarten and began shooting up the nearby neighborhood.

Apparently he realized that the kindergarten was sure to have armed adults, and that he could not stay at the school long enough to make sure he actually murdered someone. This is prime example as to why Gun-Free zones are not working at that leaves me to my last point. Gun-Free zones are an illusion of safety. There was an article from townhall. com by a Ken Blackwell stating, “The tragedy at Virginia Tech-a trauma for the entire nation-forces us to ask how something like this could happen.

How could a fatal shooting happen in a place where guns are not allowed? The answer: Gun-free zones don't make college students or their campuses safe. ” This is true. Gun-free zones do not make people safe. Gun control laws encourage criminals rather than intimidate them. These zones are the safest place to

kill people. If you were a criminal, you would prefer the people you are victimizing to be unarmed.

I have now told you the advantages of allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons. It will be a good idea. Now ask yourself this question, If you were a student involved in a school shooting would you line up against a wall and wait to be shot like the others or wish that your teacher or somebody had a gun to stop the killer? I don’t know about you but I would wish that somebody had a gun to stop the killer.
