Superstition is a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences that may bring good or bad luck. It has become a daily ritual for some. In Islam, there is no belief in superstitions as they believe Allah controls all and determines the outcome for a reason. Different countries have different superstitions, such as chewing gum after dark turning you into zombie in Turkey and four being considered very unlucky in China. "Fingers crossed" is a classic example of a superstition and there are many more that are followed without knowing the reason behind them, like saying "god blesses you" when someone sneezes, which was believed during the plague in DADA. China does not have any phone numbers that start with four due to its association with bad luck.
In south Korea,
...it is believed that sleeping with a fan in the room can be a death sentence, as it is thought to cause the soul to "escape" from the body. Some fans even have timers to turn off after a few minutes. To stop this from happening, people say "god bless you" to stuff the soul back into the body. We still use this phrase today, along with other superstitions like knocking on wood to avoid jinxing something. Superstitions have existed since the beginning of time and can be found in most religions, such as Hinduism's belief in "rah kola." Even the Roman Catholic Church encourages throwing salt over one's shoulder to ward off the devil. In conclusion, our everyday customs are often rooted in superstitions that we may take for granted, but they continue to shape our behavior and beliefs.
