Superhero Characters Are a Form of Modern Mythology Essay Example
In terms of the term 'Superhero', Superman and Batman are commonly linked. Nevertheless, these renowned figures actually originated in American history during World War II. Both Marvel and DC comics have played a role in their fame, leading to various iterations of each character. Additionally, there exists an ongoing discussion regarding whether they can be classified as contemporary myths.
However, considering superhero characters as a form of modern mythology would be a stretch. In this essay, I will argue that superhero characters are not a form of modern mythology and explain why. According to Donna Rosenberg, myth is "a sacred story from the past that may explain the origin of the universe and life or express moral values in human terms" (Curtis, 2019). In Chinese culture, souls are judged in the ten courts of hell based on various aspects of their life. Hence, people are taught to live their lives fully, perform good deeds, and show filial piety to their parents. The stories depicting events in hell serve as a means to instill correct moral values in individuals' everyday lives. However, during World War II, superhero characters were introduced as a form of propaganda to encourage Americans to purchase war bonds. Presently, superhero characters have become icons that inspire people to emulate them. In order for these characters and their narratives to remain pertinent and reflect society's moral values, they must adapt to changes in societal moral
perspectives (Curtis, 2019)1.
Superhero characters do not have the same impact on society as myths, which are respected and followed for their moral values and cultural importance. In order to be considered modern mythology, superheroes must play a similar role in today's society. Myths are specific stories about gods or superhuman beings and their extraordinary events, existing beyond normal human experiences (Buxton, Smith, & Bolle, 2017). These legends were created to provide explanations and insights into the unseen world. On the other hand, superhero characters are fictional stories based on these myths and enjoyed as entertainment. For instance, Wonder Woman is believed to be the daughter of Hippolyta, who is known as the queen of the Amazons in ancient Greek mythology (Magnani, 2017).
The character Wonder Woman is believed to be inspired by Greek Mythology and was created to represent the perfect leader of love and a woman who should rule the world. She possesses the strength of Superman and the charm of a beautiful woman (Kinane, 2017). Superheroes were originally created for entertainment purposes rather than explaining unexplainable events in our lives. While some superheroes have god-like abilities, their origins are usually explained through science fiction instead of classical mythology. For example, Superman gained his powers from Earth's yellow sun, while his home planet Krypton had a red sun and its inhabitants did not possess superhuman abilities. Similar to Apollo in appearance, Hercules in strength, Lancelot in chivalry, and Hermes in swiftness; Superman embodies all the traits of a legendary hero (Caruth, 1968).
Although Superman's powers might be compared to those of Hercules, his weakness can be explained by science, which is not possible for the gods
and demi-gods in classic mythology. The examples above make it clear that superhero characters have been influenced by mythology in various ways. Whether it is their visual or textual similarities, mythology and superhero characters do share something in common: both ancient and modern cultures view and respect them equally. However, mythology plays a greater role in giving meaning and value to human life, while superhero characters are more focused on entertainment and commercial use.
