With spring break nearing, many teenagers are visiting tanning salons to achieve a sun-kissed appearance. This is regardless of whether they will be vacationing in the tropics or staying home for MTV's Spring Break. Nicole Cooney, an employee at Tropical Rendezvous Tanning Salon for over a year, confirms that the salon is experiencing increased traffic during this busy season.
During the summer, there is a low period followed by the arrival of midwinter customers who had previously visited the tanning salon to maintain their tan. At Tropical Rendezvous, a system is in place to reject customers who tan excessively, as it is easy to become addicted to the warmth and relaxation of the tanning bed. The salon's computers are programmed to only allow tanning after a full 24-hour period has passed since the previous session.
While tanning beds can be
...enjoyable for some people as a way to relax and avoid an orange tint, overexposure to them is harmful. Amanda Falcon, a student, occasionally uses tanning beds for these reasons especially during the stressful winter months. However, it's important to note that excessive use of tanning beds can have negative physical effects.
Dr. Ted Daly, M.D. at Garden City Dermatology, explains that exposure to light can cause skin injury resulting in darkening of the skin.
Junior Sarah Lackner gave a persuasive speech in her public speaking class about the harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds on the skin. Her research disproves the effectiveness of base tans, which she avoids using. Dr. Daly agrees with Lackner's findings and notes that base tans can increase ultraviolet exposure, especially for women aged 25-29 who are at higher risk for
developing melanoma on their legs.
There has been a 5% yearly rise in skin cancer rates, with even young children experiencing various types of the disease. To prevent exposure to dangerous UV rays, individuals can opt for alternative spray-on tanning products that offer a bronzed appearance without risking cancer. Whether soaking up natural sun on Punta Cana's beaches or utilizing tanning beds for a sun-kissed look, always remember to protect your skin by applying sunscreen.
