My time in America so far has been nothing short of tremendous. I started by studying English and later enrolled for my master’s degree in Public Health Nursing at the University of Hartford. To this point, my experience at Hartford has been beyond expectation and imagination. I feel at home and appreciated. The learning environment is accommodative, and all my attention is focused on completing my master’s degree and proceeding on to my doctoral studies, hopefully at the same institution.

I would like to complete my studies here because the faculty has a lot to offer not only for the mainstream studies but also the general good of the student. For instance, the faculty takes time to focus on foreign students and carries out extensive research to enable the student to tackle any special needs in their country of origin.

In this regard, I would like my doctoral studies to be more inclined to the special needs of people in Saudi Arabia. In most of the places I worked, I realized that chronic diseases were at an alarmingly high rate.

Hypertension was the most prevalent, with children as young as seven years getting diagnosed with hypertension. I am not sure whether it could be classified as a lifestyle disorder, but the hypertension situation in Saudi Arabia needs to be addressed urgently. In some families, including my extended family, hypertension is a common condition.

A few of my cousins were diagnosed with hypertension even before they reached school-going age. It worries me because the disease has long been associated with age and lifestyle. While on an internship at the Prince Sultan Military Medical City

and later at the King Salman Hospital, I realized that people from all corners of my country were flocking in for hypertension treatment. The inference is that hypertension could soon become a health crisis in Saudi Arabia.

I would like to study and research extensively on hypertension before I complete my studies and probably work on several hypertension-based theses. The guidance from the faculty at Hartford has been amazing, and I am sure it can only get better with time. My overall objective of the study will be to return to my country armed with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle hypertension. I have come across many papers discussing hypertension in America, and I intend to discuss them with my colleagues and instructors as a means of sharpening my knowledge.

My sponsors for the scholarship, Shaqra University, have a lot of faith in me. The competition for the scholarship was tough, and I am glad I won. The best I can do is pay attention to my studies and learn as much as I can.

Once I return to Saudi Arabia, it will be my pleasure to continue teaching at Shaqra University. Passing the knowledge to others implies that the Saudi people will have the more highly qualified personnel to take care of the health.

I have read a lot about a system commonly used in America called patient-centered care. The system focuses on providing customized healthcare to each individual based on an assessment of their unique needs. I would like to practice the same in my country because I feel that healthcare practitioners in Saudi are overwhelmed by the number of patients thus opting to give a

generalized form of treatment.

The level of awareness of hypertension is also low thus many people suffer in silence without knowing what ails them. This denies the patients the opportunity of receiving personalized healthcare that puts into account each patient’s unique needs. I will feel fulfilled and happier when universal healthcare is achieved in my country considering that many people in rural areas are yet to enjoy the full benefits of modern medicine and health research. I believe that my graduation with a doctoral degree will enable me to make a bigger impact in the Saudi Arabian health sector.

In conclusion, I believe that an opportunity to study for my doctoral degree at the University of Hartford will go a long way in enabling me to make a huge impact in the healthcare sector. I also believe that I have a lot to share with my colleagues and faculty for the betterment of the provision of healthcare.
