Rules by: Cynthia Lord: a Book That Has Changed My Life Essay Example
Rules
The novel Rules by Cynthia Lord has greatly impacted my life since I first encountered it in fifth grade. It tells the story of 12-year-old Catherine, who yearns for an ordinary existence but struggles with living in a family that revolves around her brother's autism. Throughout her life, she has faced embarrassment from her brother's disability and public behavior. Catherine has consistently taught David various rules, including "Don't undress in public" and "Keep toys out of the fish tank."
By sharing numerous experiences like going to the movies, bowling, and dining out, this book serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of accepting people with disabilities for who they are. Although my close friend Rachel has Cerebral Palsy which affects her mobility and communication skills, I eventually grew to thoroughly appreciate and celebrate her unique qualities despite initially f
...eeling uncomfortable spending time with her in public.
Despite enduring prolonged stares and questions from unfamiliar individuals in public spaces, including hearing curious children ask their guardians "What's the matter with her?", I have reached the understanding that there is no justification for feeling ashamed. This realization has been reinforced by reading this book. Moreover, Rachel, a dear companion with whom I share a deep connection, has made notable progress since our elementary school years and brings joy to those near her through her kind-hearted nature. Our daily embrace in the hallway and extended advisory conversations are highly valued.
Being Rachel's best friend fills me with immense pride. Her story of acceptance has taught me that her disability is not the sole aspect of her identity. Despite her distinctive gait, speech and appearance, she is an incredible person.
