Reflection is a strong skill and process of finding our strengths, learning needs and areas of improvement ( CNO, 2020). It begins by analyzing the situation and changing our behaviours in practice. That helps nurses to provide quality care to patients and solve the critical problems. Self-reflection is a tool to become more competencies to deliver safe and quality care to patients.
Nursing is the therapeutic relationship that enables the client to attain and maintain optimal function by promoting the client’s health through assessing, providing care for and treating the conditions (CNO,2019). When I was a child, my grandmother was admitted in hospital due to asthma and heart problems, at that time I observed some behaviours, caring nature of nurses and a trustful relationship with my grandmother. It was my inspiration for nursing. I also influenced by r
...eading the history of Florence Nightingale to become a nurse.
I earned a nursing license of the registered nurse in Nepal after passing the diploma of nursing in 2004. The jurisdictional examination is a common competency for the entry-level competencies for registered nurses in Canada (CNO, 2020), which was not required in Nepal. I have also studied Post Basic bachelor’s in nursing in 2012 to enhance my body of knowledge. I worked as a registered nurse from 2005 to 2017 in the different settings of health services such as at the hospital, at International Non-Government Organizations, and as a nursing instructor followed by guidelines of Nepal Nursing Council.
I also have experience in rural communities to meet their health care needs. To grow my knowledge and practice in the changing environment of health, I have attended some pieces of training and
course such as Response to Emergency, Minilap, Implant insertion and removal, Infection Prevention and Quality Improvement, First Aid and CPR, and Counseling Psychology. My professional knowledge, skill and experiences improved my working capacity in a culturally diverse population in Nepal.
My future goal is to become a registered nurse in Canada and provide safe, competent and comprehensive care to patients. To become a qualified competent nurse requires skills and abilities for nursing practice in Ontario ( CNO, 2012).
In Nepal, I got the opportunity to learn various procedures seeking help from the nursing team in the most difficult time. I remember one incident, when I was an operation theatre, a client was prepared for cholecystectomy, but she refused surgery before going to the Operation table.
I convinced her to be ready through my decision and took written consent for the open surgery. After reading the guidelines of practice and ethics, I knew that health personnel have no authority to make decisions in treatment on behalf of clients, except in an emergency (CNO,2017). Likewise, I also knew that patients have the right to get the necessary information to make a choice to consent or refuse the treatment (CNO,2017).
Safe and quality care depends on the ability of health service providers to communicate well with patients and other professionals (CPSI, 2009). For instance, I could consult with the surgeon to provide full information about the surgical procedure before to take forcefull consent from a client who was refusing the surgery. Ineffective and unclear communication can create a stressful situation. Now, I learnt that better communication plays a vital role in providing nursing care. When I look at ethics, client choice and
client wellbeing are the main ethical values ( CNO, 2020).
I have another experience related to privacy and confidentiality when I was working in a community hospital, a pregnant woman came with a report of HIV for Prevention of mother-to-child transmission counselling. After a while, her mother in law came and asked about clients' diagnosis and reports. I gave detail information without the patient’s permission. Then, the woman told me not to share the diagnostic report with mother in law. Later, I realized that I should have to take consent before to share information and need to know more about privacy and confidentiality legislation and ethical values in nursing. I apologized to her and tried to make a trustful relationship and respected her rights.
Besides, When I read CNO practice standard and ethics, I found that confidentiality and privacy violations cause serious harm to the client, and it is difficult to make a trustful relationship during the treatment (CNO 2019). Furthermore, When I look at the safety competencies, effective communication is important and beneficial to both patients and nurses to build trust (CPSI,2009). Effective communication is also a crucial skill to protect patient confidentiality and privacy (CPSI,2009). Nurses need to follow the guidelines and tools for patient safety in the nursing profession.
Among challenges, effective communication is the most challenging part for me to protect both privacy and confidentiality and patient safety because Canada is a multicultural and multilingual country. It is difficult to understand different kinds of tones of the language. I would face another challenge in learning the technology and system in documentation to keep records because I am not much familiar. As I look at
myself, challenges are learning opportunities.
In conclusion, self-reflection is important to find strength, capacity and needs to be learned throughout the profession. Understanding values and ethics, decision-making process, safety competence and public protection by self-regulation are most important in nursing care. following the standard guidelines are an essential part to grow knowledge, skill and capacity.
During the seeking guidance from the writing centre, I involved in rewriting somesentences, correcting the tense, grammar, learned about how to connect ideas and challenges and seek guidance in referencing and citation. I had insufficient ideas in my first assignment. Now I learn more and highly satisfied with the writing centre because I improved my scholarly writing assignment in part two. In short, the proofreader is necessary for improving academic writing.
