Sex workers who engage in consensual sexual acts with other adults for financial gain are restricted by the United States government.

Williams states that each year about 62,668 individuals who provide sexual services in exchange for payment are apprehended and penalized with fines ranging from $750 to $10,000 and up to one year of imprisonment. This falls in line with Oxford's description of prostitution as a career which involves exchanging sexual favors for monetary gain. Despite the acknowledgement that prostitution is an inherent human desire, the expenses required to train agents against it remain undisclosed. Consequently, there is ambiguity surrounding how taxpayers' money in America is employed in an unachievable endeavor.

Although there is potential for advancement and success, the old profession remains unlawful in the United States. This mirrors the prohibition of alcohol during the Great Depression, which was unsuccessful in achieving its goals with the 18th Amendment. The prohibition on manufacturing and transporting alcohol resulted in an increase of underground transactions and homemade production, leading to a surge in pricing. As such, history appears to be repeating itself as the current ban on the old profession does not effectively prevent its occurrence.
