also known as the Talbotype process, which used paper coated with silver iodine. This process involved sensitizing paper with a silver salt solutions and exposing it to light. This created a negative image of the object or person which could then be used to create contraceptives of the positive. Calotype allows multiple positive prints to be made but the quality wasn't' as good.

designed a bellows camera in 1847 that made focusing on the subject easier. He also used interchangeable backgrounds in the photographs that he took and he began retouching the negatives to reduce or eliminate any imperfections.

in 1871 he developed a way to use gelatin instead of glass for the negatives.
