Our contemporary society, often labeled as "high-tech," is deeply ingrained with technology. The gadgets or tools one owns often mirrors their persona in this tech-savvy world, indicating the level of technological advancement we've reached. Comparing life without technology to a life devoid of air isn't an overstatement in today's tech-driven era, highlighting our heavy reliance on it. Our lifestyle has dramatically shifted and continues to evolve with each significant new invention. Crucial inventions that have made a substantial impact consist of the wheel, light bulb, telephone, various modes of transport, refrigerator, radio, television, plastic and computers.

The primary aim of these technological advancements was to make tasks easier, light up dark spaces with electricity, improve and speed up communication, and accelerate global mobility. I am grateful for t

he opportunity to live in a technologically advanced society that enables us to quickly research subjects on the internet, communicate instantly over great distances, and transport large loads using vehicles such as trucks, ships, and airplanes. Given this situation, are we as a community taking our privilege for granted and undervaluing what we have?

In the forgotten era, people were remarkably self-sufficient, often making their essential items such as bread, butter and clothes from scratch. However, in our modern world today, many of us have lost these skills due to our reliance on machines or simply buying what we need from retail stores. This predicament brings about a concern; are we exposing ourselves to potential "cyber attacks"? Could our personal gadgets be used against us? While computer viruses are prevalent nowadays, could there be a chance that hackers could completely cut off our powe

supply thereby diminishing our "driving forces"? If this situation arises, I suppose all of us would turn into something similar to "headless chickens," thrown into confusion and perplexity.

Two main factors typically result in panic: initially, being unready because of an inability to predict and secondly, the majority are uninformed about methods to survive. On a daily basis, our reliance on cooking appliances, refrigerators for food preservation and electricity's essential role in operating our home water systems is evident. Some sewage systems also require electric power for effective functionality. During natural calamities such as Hurricane Ike, early warnings delivered through television news broadcasts, computers and radios provide individuals with an opportunity to prepare for possible power disruptions.

As the storm neared Houston, local supermarkets were swamped with inhabitants stockpiling necessary items like ice, coolers, canned goods, bottled water, flashlights, batteries and even power generators. However, a large number of people suffered through long bouts of power outage for numerous weeks causing them to eat out or seek refuge at their family's or friend’s homes. Luckily my family was among the small proportion who had their electricity restored by Sunday evening. We managed to get through from Saturday morning until Sunday night due to my mother's resourceful and adept management of meals.

The interior of our refrigerator remained cold, hence we decided to keep the few items inside it unaffected. Taking out food and beverages was done promptly to ensure the refrigerator retained its cool temperature. We prepared sandwiches with cold cuts, while several meals were cooked by my mother using a match to ignite the gas on the stove - an act

that requires caution due to its potential danger. Fortunately, our water supply was unbroken. Nonetheless, after several days, we were urged by our community to restrict our toilet flushes as power outage affected our sewage system.

In spite of my family's successful adaptation to a life without electricity, it was clear that many of our neighbors relied heavily on generators; evidently, going without power isn't feasible for everyone. (Is this matter deserving further scrutiny?) The biggest hurdle I encountered revolved around not having the usual contemporary conveniences and was largely tied to boredom; being cooped up inside for two straight days was quite challenging. Nonetheless, I participated in various worthwhile activities like spending quality time with my child, chronicling ideas in an academic diary, and immersing myself in books - such hobbies harken back to simpler times.

Despite the notion held by some that their existence is inextricably linked with their smartphones or computers, it is entirely possible for us to thrive without these modern devices. As our ancestors have demonstrated, life can go on without such conveniences. It's vital for us to familiarize ourselves with historical lifestyles and skills. In line with the enduring wisdom "knowledge is power", this will become an essential survival strategy should there be a disruption in our current way of living. Furthermore, deeply appreciating and valuing the innate beauty of our world could be advantageous. One approach to achieve this is by forsaking modern luxuries.
