What is osteopathic medicine?
answer
Touch on: -founded by Dr. Still -health-based model of medicine Osteopathic Medicine is a complete system of medical care with a philosophy that combines the needs of the patient with current practices of medicine, surgery and obstetrics. Treating the body as a unit, it emphasizes the interrelationships between structure and function with a particular appreciation for the body's ability to heal itself. Concept #1: human body is a unified organism; all systems operate in unison..close relationship between body structure and function -->more holistic treatment, not just the interdependent parts of the human body but a patient's mental, emotional and environmental status Concept #2: musculoskeletal system is key element of health (2/3rds of body mass)---osteopathic manipulation, providing alternative to intrusive therapy Concept #3: Body has a natural tendency toward health, to resist disease and heal itself -therefore, DO's emphasize "wellness"-prevent illness via proper nutrition and keeping fit, also guiding patients to take more responsibility for their own being and alter unhealthy patterns
