Shadowed Men In Black II by Robert Gordon delves into the concept of a secretive and obscure government. In Gordon’s narrative, extraterrestrials are transported to Earth from a spaceship and subsequently confront the obstacles of assimilating into human society. Serleena, a Kylothian queen, finds a vocation that allows her to exploit her talents. With her ability to shape-shift, she can enhance and alter her appearance to reach the pinnacle of attractiveness, ultimately becoming a supermodel and captivating men.
Other aliens assume various occupations and lifestyles, including Scrad & Charlie, who turn into villains, and an alien named Jack Jeebs, who becomes the owner of a pawn shop. Humans in the novel generally overlook their presence, and those who do witness them are taken for an interview with the Men in
...Black and promptly subjected to a flash from a neuralyzer. The Men in Black frequently employ this device to wipe all memories of the alien encounter.
Any human who could benefit from the Men In Black, however, is not subject to neuralization and instead, they are brought into the Men In Black facility. In the final chapters of the story, the Men in Black go to great lengths to erase the memory of the people of New York City who have experienced the catastrophic events with the aliens. They accomplish this by incorporating a large neutralizer into the Statue of Liberty and activating it. The lives possessed by the aliens and the actions taken by the Men in Black represent postmodernism. This concept implies that our current world is corrupted and any knowledge about the unknown should be isolated or eliminated.
