Mathematically Gifted and Talented Children Essay Example
A mathematically gifted student is one who has special abilities to engage in different forms of qualitative mathematical thinking. Kruteski pinpoints three approaches in solving mathematical problems, geometric that rely on visual support, analytic that involves thinking in a logical, verbal manner and harmonic that depends on the student's ability to display both geometric and analytic approaches to solving mathematical problems (Deal & Wismer, 2010). Parents’ involvement and recognition of mathematically gifted children and their mathematics education motivate them to perform excellently in mathematics.
Parents play a vital role in identifying from an early age their children’s special abilities and talents. It’s very easy for a parent to realize their child’s mathematical abilities and seek support for their children. In essences, when schools or teachers engage parents in their teaching programs, parents will be encouraged to increase their efforts in assisting their children in learning.
Despite some students having greater mathematical abilities than their parents, parents role is still very crucial in providing a supportive framework which encourages them to work hard and achieve good grades. Most parents of children with mathematical talents tend to play an advocacy role especially those who are dissatisfied by their children education and want alternative provisions (Bicknell, 2014). Given the role played by parents involved in their children mathematics learning programs and their relationship with their gifted child, homework appears to influence the student's outcome in
great way.
From the research design to understand how parents identify mathematical talents and their role in their children’s mathematical development showed that high efficacy parents are more involved in their children learning compared with the other parents. Parents acknowledged their children's involvement exhibited their kid's early mathematical signs is activities such as pattern making and playing with numbers. It was noted that no parent was informed about their children special talent in mathematics until they joined a school (Bicknell, 2014). Apart from providing resources, parents used existing school systems to track their children’s performance level. For instance, they used worksheets, competition results, and written reports. Parents also acted as resource providers, motivators, monitors and advisers in mathematics context and learning. The child’s performance in mathematics highly depends on parental support. Teachers should support parents in realizing a better understanding of their double role in fostering their children ability in learning mathematics.
