As leaders and managers, it is important to cultivate an effective management style that includes providing direction, motivating staff, and implementing plans. This requires an openness to communication, the ability to identify and solve problems, and the willingness to provide training and coaching to enhance skills. Effective managers are able to compensate for or manage around weaknesses in order to achieve success.

Organizational behavior examines how the behavior of individuals influences organizations and how organizations can impact individual behavior. In day-to-day operations, managers utilize four predominant approaches to organizational behavior: Maslow's Hierarchy, Herzberg's Approach, Expectancy Theory, and Alder's ERG Approach.
