At the heart of every Lithuanian Christmas feast is a large plate of "Christmas Wafers." On Christmas Eve, meat is not consumed, but on Christmas day fish, typically herring, is a popular choice. Additionally, the Lithuanian people enjoy a delicious treat called Kuciucia, which is a small sweet pastry. Kisielius is another staple food in Lithuania.
Kisielius is a cranberry and strawberry drink that is reminiscent of
...a refreshing smoothie. In addition to this drink, Lithuanians also enjoy dried fruit soup and beet soup accompanied by mushroom-filled dumplings. Vegetable salad and boiled or baked potatoes are also common in their cuisine. Sauerkraut, a type of porridge sweetened with honey and bread chunks, is another traditional Lithuanian dish. A proverb related to Lithuanian food emphasizes the importance of being grateful for what one has: "If you offer a lazy man an egg, he'll ask you to peel it for him." This proverb highlights the value of appreciating one's food and beverages. When it comes to traditions, a solemn ritual involves lighting a candle in remembrance of those who cannot attend a celebration or have passed away.
Another custom in Lithuania is that Santa Claus cannot come to visit because the country is located in the far North, close to the North Pole. Instead, parents tak
on the role of St. Nicholas and deliver gifts to their children while Santa Claus visits other countries like America, Australia, Brazil, and so on.
When kids put on costumes during Christmas, they also place presents under the tree. These children believe in the magic of Christmas. Parents partake in the festivities by filling science beakers with various liquids such as colored water, papaya juice, poppy milk, and a special sleepy mist. According to a myth, consuming this concoction will cause one to fall asleep within minutes. There is also a rumor that failing to fall asleep within a short period of time will result in eternal insomnia. Additionally, straw is placed beneath a white cloth on the table. If someone pulls a small piece of straw while the person seated to their right pulls a larger one, it is believed that the former will perish before the latter.
Traditions are an enduring aspect of Lithuanian Christmas, firmly rooted in their culture. Among these customs is the meticulous and refined decoration that Lithuanians employ during this festive season. A notable element is the use of straw, which serves as the foundation for a neatly placed, spotlessly clean white cloth on the table. Atop the straw, candles are arranged alongside leaves and twigs from a fir tree. This arrangement evokes images of baby Jesus laying in his manger, creating a lasting impression in people's minds.
In the town center, there is a massive tree adorned with numerous lights and a star on top. The tree is also embellished with ornaments crafted by the townspeople, and nearby, there is freshly made popcorn to express gratitude for their warmth and homes.
Additionally, the tree is adorned with glitter, cotton, and a generous gift from the town's leader. This gift is intended to enhance the town's allure to visitors or assist the residents of Lithuania. The local police, known as the fuzze by Lithuanians, join in the festive spirit by adorning street lights with Santa hats, illuminating the sidewalks with lights, and decorating their cars with tree decals and additional lights.
A Lithuanian proverb states that if it were not for sorrow and difficult times, every day would be like Christmas. The proverb emphasizes the importance of gratitude for the actions of God (Jesus) and encourages us to celebrate it joyfully. When comparing Lithuanian and US Christmas traditions, there are both similarities and differences. One notable difference is the cuisine. In the US, we typically enjoy dishes such as ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, and pumpkin pie. In Lithuania, however, their Christmas meal consists of fish, smoothies, pastries, potatoes, and various types of soups.
In terms of food preferences, Lithuania and we enjoy different types of cuisines. However, when it comes to decorations, we have a similar approach. Both of us put up a tree in the main room, adorn the exterior of our houses with lights, and use tablecloths. Likewise, Lithuania also utilizes a tablecloth and places a large tree at the center of their town. While Lithuania includes a plate of Christmas Wafers in the middle of the table, we fill the air with cheerful Christmas music, singing "Fa La La La La La." Additionally, both cultures decorate their trees with popcorn and ornaments.
Both in America and Lithuania, we have different traditions for Christmas. In America,
my family has a tradition of going to the mall to see what my brother believes is the "Real Santa." We also visit family, cook and bake, and go to special places. On the other hand, Lithuania has unique traditions such as drinking "Beaker Juice," sharing myths, and spending time with family. Despite our differences, we share some similarities and differences when it comes to celebrating Christmas.
I have discussed the delicious food, stunning decor, and unique traditions of Lithuanians during Christmas. My absolute favorite holiday is undoubtedly Christmas. I believe Christmas is wonderful and will forever hold a special place in my heart. I adore the charming decorations, enchanting Christmas music, and delectable dishes we enjoy.
