These skills profoundly shape an individual's character and behavior, making their effective utilization essential in all aspects of life. However, the true significance of the term "skill" is often overlooked despite frequent discussions.
Skill is important in performing a task well and with few errors, showing competence. Personal skills are crucial for advancing in a career as employers look for specific skills and competencies when hiring. However, the necessary personal skills may vary depending on the industry.
When it comes to skills, there is a distinction between the ones required in social sciences and
...those necessary in science, research, and development. Having the right skill set is crucial for achieving our ambitions. Many people end up discontented with their careers because either they choose the wrong path or feel unsatisfied in their current jobs, as studies show. Thus, it is important to take time for self-reflection and evaluate our strengths and weaknesses before making career choices. The term "personal skill" can be vague and misinterpreted depending on the situation.
The field of sociology categorizes personal skills into two main groups: soft skills and hard skills. Soft skills encompass qualities that are broad in nature and support our everyday interactions with others. These attributes can pertain to emotions, personality, habits, and communication. Soft skills are cultivated through social interactions. Conversely, hard skills are applied in professional settings and necessitate specialized knowledge within a specific
domain. Hard skills can be more easily quantified and evaluated.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze my personal skills, to identify the valuable skills I could offer, assess areas for improvement, clarify my career goals, and evaluate the objectives I would like to achieve in my professional life. I possess exceptional communication skills and thrive in interactive and sociable environments. I am an expert in environmental assessment and geographical information systems, with specific expertise in conducting environmental analysis. Additionally, I possess knowledge in assessing various water quality parameters such as bacterial presence, quantities of suspended and dissolved solids, biological and chemical oxygen demand, as well as dissolved oxygen.
I have expertise in drafting environmental quality and environmental risk assessment reports by conducting field environmental studies. I am also skilled in geographical information systems and remote sensing, working for a consultancy firm. In my role, I collaborate with colleagues to perform feasibility studies for infrastructural projects or any other projects that may affect the environment. While I acknowledge that there is still room for growth, I am determined to tap into my full potential.
Although I possess sufficient skills for carrying out my responsibilities, I aim to enhance my abilities and expertise in remote sensing. My ultimate professional aspiration is to emerge as a prominent environmental analyst and contribute significantly towards establishing a resilient and sustainable environment for present and future generations. I anticipate progressing within the hierarchy of my organization and attaining a prominent position. My most noteworthy achievement would be authoring and publishing a book on environmental justice.
The purpose of the book is to increase understanding and awareness of environmental justice, amidst the
numerous developments driven by profit-seeking individuals and organizations. These developments often result in compromises regarding environmental concerns. My book will specifically tackle the topics of pollution, environmental quality, preservation of endangered plants and animals, as well as addressing risks such as natural disasters and air quality. Moreover, my personality traits, including being analytical and meticulous, align well with the requirements of my job.
I am of the opinion that enhancing my existing personal skills will positively impact my future career development and progression. Making informed choices about job opportunities not only increases productivity but also leads to job satisfaction, ultimately benefiting the economy by ensuring fair compensation for work performed.
